APPEAL FOR HELP!

The house is now being seriously undermined by water ingress due to the disintegration of the lime render which covers the building.

Work needs to be done on roofs and chimneys. We need to raise substantial amounts of money. We would very much appreciate it if those who can help could donate what they can and also spread the word about this URGENT NEED.

Admiralty House was erected in the mid-1880s and overlooked the Edwardian admiralty base of Cork harbour. It is typical of a British Naval colonial building, particularly its extensive verandas.

In 1917, when the Americans entered the First World War, Admiralty House was used as the American Naval Base. In 1923, the house was burnt, but it was restored in 1928 by the Bishop of Cloyne, Dr. Browne and became a novitiate for the Convents of Mercy in the Cloyne Diocese.

In the early 1990s, the Bishop of Cloyne was seeking a Benedictine Community with Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration for his Diocese, and made his invitation to the Tyburn Nuns. On May 31st, 1993, the Community of St. Benedict's Priory arrived in Cobh, to hear the bells of St. Coleman's Cathedral playing Salve Regina in welcome.
